The Vermont Symphony Orchestra with Andre Watts
BELLOWS FALLS – In the cold of January, for three magical days, Bellows Falls will come alive with the sounds of classical music in the air, and the busying of musicians getting ready for their performances, joined by a superstar of the classical music world.
André Watts, one of the world’s most celebrated and beloved classical pianists, will perform at the Bellows Falls Opera House as part of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra’s 75th Anniversary presentations. The January 29th concert is presented by Vermont Festivals LLC, and the artists will spend three days in the village rehearsing for this and two subsequent performances.
“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for area residents to see and hear a world renowned pianist in such an intimate setting as the Bellows Falls opera house,” Vermont Festivals Producer Raymond Massucco said. “The VSO will not only be performing at the opera house on that Friday, but they will rehearse for three days in the theater prior to the concert.”
The concert, conducted by Jaime Laredo, will include a world premiere of David Ludwig’s Symphony No. 1, “Book of Hours,” which was commissioned by the VSO for the 75th Anniversary Premiere Masterworks Concert events.
Rounding out the performance will be Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides “Fingal’s Cave,” and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, “Emperor.”
Watts has been a strategic part of the classical music scene in this country since 1963, when at the age of 16 he made his debut with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in a nationally televised concert. Just four years later, he set out on his first world tour, and has not stopped since.
By 1969, armed with recording contracts, he was on a full-scale concert schedule booked three years in advance, and his career continued to grow and prosper through the decades.
Always in great demand, Watts performs the most prestigious concert stages and has been honored by numerous awards and designations. He has performed before royalty in Europe, and for heads of state all over the world.
“We are incredibly fortunate that the VSO chose the beautifully restored Opera House and Vermont Festivals to showcase the incomparable Andre Watts in a rare Vermont performance,” Massucco said. “We expect to sell out well in advance of the concert.”
The doors open at 7 p.m., and the concert begins at 7:30 p.m.
